# Importing/Exporting Process Mining Data

## Overview

Event Log data may originate either from an [internal process-tracking](/process-mining/docs/process-mining-requirements) Data Structure, such as a [Case Entity](https://documentation.decisions.com/process-mining/docs/navigating-to-process-mining?highlight=Case%20Entity), or from external software such as Jira, ServiceNow, or Salesforce.

Regardless of the source, all Event Log data must contain the [required data variables.](https://documentation.decisions.com/process-mining/docs/process-mining-requirements#:~:text=Flow%20Execution%20Extension-,Data%20Requirements,-Regardless%20of%20location) Ensure that the data meets these requirements before importing.

## Importing External Data

Data from any system, such as ERP, CRM, PDM, legacy logs, etc., can be imported via the supported file extensions:

- BPMN
- CMMN
- CSV / CSV.GZ
- DMN
- XES / XES.GZ
- XLSX / XLSX.GZ
- JSON / JZON.GZ

Importing with JSONWhen importing with JSON, ensure the JSON file includes attributes for each required data variable.

1. Log in to Process Mining. On the Process Mining Home page, select **Import/Export > Import File.**![](https://cdn.document360.io/6ef8bcc1-6489-4486-9ad1-83acff7e5df0/Images/Documentation/image-1644336992934.png)
2. Select a supported file for import. Upon importing a file, columns may be assigned essential tags to determine how they are treated in Process Mining. [Video](https://cdn.document360.io/6ef8bcc1-6489-4486-9ad1-83acff7e5df0/Images/Documentation/2022-02-08_11h22_06.mp4)
3. Finally, Users can custom sort events tagged in the Activity column, as shown in the prior video, before confirming the import. One column cannot hold multiple tags. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/6ef8bcc1-6489-4486-9ad1-83acff7e5df0/Images/Documentation/2025-06-10_14h07_41.png)
4. After the data is successfully imported, the [Process Map Analyzer](/process-mining/docs/process-map-analyzer-overview) will automatically open.
